Travel Health & Vaccination
Planning a trip abroad? We can help with advice and the travel vaccines that are provided free on the NHS. For all other travel vaccines and detailed country-specific guidance, we will signpost you to an accredited travel clinic.
When to Book
To make sure you have time to receive any required vaccines and for them to work properly, please arrange travel health advice and vaccinations at least 6–8 weeks before you travel. Some vaccines need several doses spread over weeks or months, and a small number (for example yellow fever) have specific timing rules. Booking early gives the best chance of completing your course in time.
Note: Yellow fever vaccination must be given at least 10 days before travel where it is required for entry to some countries.
Vaccinations We Provide
We provide the travel vaccines that are available free on the NHS. These include:
- Cholera
- Hepatitis A
- Typhoid
- Diphtheria / Polio / Tetanus (usually given as a combined booster)
These vaccines are provided free because they reduce the risk of dangerous infections being brought into the UK. If you need any of the vaccines above, we can arrange them for registered patients, or we will advise how to access them locally.
Vaccinations We DO NOT Provide
Many travel vaccinations are not available free from the NHS and are delivered by private travel clinics. Examples include (but are not limited to):
- Yellow fever (available only at designated centres)
- Rabies
- Japanese encephalitis
- Tick-borne encephalitis
- Meningitis vaccines where not covered by NHS programmes
If you require any of these vaccines, we recommend booking with a local private travel clinic. Private clinics can provide a full travel risk assessment, prescribe antimalarials where appropriate, and deliver the full range of travel vaccines.
How to Request Travel Vaccinations From Grove Road Surgery
- Call reception at least 6–8 weeks before your travel date and request a travel health questionnaire, or fill out our online travel risk assessment form.
- If you need one of the vaccines we provide free on the NHS (see list above), we will arrange an appointment for vaccination or a nurse clinic.
- If you need vaccines we do not provide, we will advise and signpost you to local private clinics (for example MASTA or other accredited travel clinics).
If your travel is within 2 weeks, please still contact us — we will advise, but you may need to book privately to ensure you receive any necessary vaccine in time.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are the free NHS travel vaccines mandatory for entry to any countries?
Some countries require proof of certain vaccines for entry (for example, yellow fever certification). Always check the entry requirements for your destination on TravelHealthPro and the destination country’s official websites.
I need yellow fever — can you do that?
Yellow fever is only available at authorised centres. We cannot provide a yellow fever certificate unless the vaccine is given at an authorised centre; we will signpost you to the nearest designated clinic.
Who should I see for a full travel risk assessment?
For a full travel risk assessment (including malaria prevention, complex schedules or occupational travel), we recommend a specialist travel clinic. See MASTA or other accredited clinics for booking and pricing.
