Chaperone Policy
At Grove Road Surgery, we are committed to providing safe, respectful, and comfortable care for all patients. We understand that some consultations, particularly intimate examinations, can be sensitive. Patients are entitled to request a chaperone for reassurance and support.
What is a Chaperone?
A chaperone is a trained member of our staff who can attend a consultation or examination to provide support, help ensure your dignity is respected, and witness that the procedure is conducted appropriately.
When You Can Request a Chaperone
- You may request a chaperone before your appointment when booking, or at any point during your consultation.
- Chaperones are particularly helpful if you are having an intimate examination, feel nervous, or wish to have someone present for reassurance.
- Patients who do not speak fluent English may find having a chaperone helpful to assist with communication and understanding.
Respecting Religious and Cultural Beliefs
We understand that patients may have religious or cultural preferences regarding who is present during a consultation or examination. We will make every reasonable effort to provide a chaperone of the same gender as the patient where requested. Please let us know your preferences so that we can accommodate them.
How to Request a Chaperone
- Inform the receptionist when booking your appointment or arriving for your consultation.
- Tell your clinician or nurse at the start of your consultation if you wish to have a chaperone present.
- We will arrange a chaperone promptly; if one is not available immediately, we will discuss the best way to proceed.
Your Rights
Having a chaperone is entirely your choice. You may decline a chaperone if you prefer, or change your mind at any point during your consultation. Our staff will always respect your decision and ensure your dignity and privacy are maintained.
